Nineteen Eighty-Four was written as a warning to the people as a way to question and stay aware of the actions and aim of the current governments. We see Nineteen Eighty-Four as a exaggerated version of what our future could become and shows how the effects of language can be used to maintain power over the people. We see this when Syme a friend of our protagonist Winston talks about the future of the language “Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.” This shows how Newspeak the national language of Oceania is being used to control the people by restricting the language. There would be no words for being opposed to the ideas of Big Brother and therefore the idea of opposition would be an impossible thing the act of destroying the language itself is the same and destroying all who would think to rebel. We can see this in our present society where Donald Trump himself can use language to manipulate the American Citizens. The ideas of how the governments can control us is evident today but the fact that we can see it happening but are yet to act may show that great literature doesn’t inspire action or maybe it is that it’s too late to stop it now and Nineteen Eighty-Four is the future and no longer a warning.
